Furniture (continued)
b. Comparison shop as many stores as possible (including local department stores) to locate the furniture you want. Although it does not happen often, you may find the exact same piece at different stores at different prices. In any case, the more furniture you see, the better chance you have of getting the right furniture quality and look for your home, at a decent price.
c. Do not hesitate to order furniture from the store, rather than just taking what they have in their warehouse. It might take several weeks, but you will have a far greater choice in fabrics and other features and designs. Remember, the store can order you many different types and designs of furniture from the manufacturers’ catalogs. So make sure you look through catalogs before making a final decision. If you are going to make a major investment in furniture, it is worth the wait to get something you really like, for essentially the same price as what is readily available from the warehouse. So do not rush, you will have the furniture for a long time.
d. Make sure you bargain for the lowest price. This is especially true if you are
planning on purchasing several pieces. Many furniture stores will bargain and you
might be able to save hundreds of dollars. Try asking the store to give you the
designers’ discount which is usually 10%-
e. When your new furniture is delivered check it over very closely. Resist the temptation to accept furniture that is marred, damaged or appears to have been made poorly. Also resist the temptation to let them talk you into letting them repair the furniture by sending a furniture repairman to your home. Most of the time this type of furniture repair does not work out well. While you might be anxious to just get your furniture in place, send it back if it is not right. The furniture store will place another order for what you want, and you will eventually get your furniture in the proper condition.
5. Consider ordering your furniture from a non-
a. Once you have located the exact furniture you want, get the manufacturer’s name, the model or group name and the piece serial number. This is usually available on a tag in the furniture store, or in the manufacturer’s catalog that is available at the furniture store. Just ask the salesman to let you browse through the manufacturer’s catalog. If you still have not been able to get the information you need, ask the salesman for the information. They will usually comply. If they ask why, just tell them you want to comparison shop.
b. While it is unlikely the furniture manufacturer will sell direct to you, try looking up their web site to see if they have the furniture you want listed and if they sell direct. Check out the prices and any shipping charges and decide if buying direct makes sense.
c. A very popular way to buy furniture and save a considerable amount over retail,
is to buy from furniture wholesalers and major discount retailers. Major sellers
include FurnitureLandSouth.com for interior furniture and PatiosUSA.com for patio
furniture. Many others are also available. You can link to 65 wholesalers/retailers
in High Point, NC by going to HighPointChamber.org, click on “furniture” and then
“furniture shopping.” Also, just do a search for discount furniture on the web.
These types of sellers offer furniture from a wide variety of manufacturers, with
savings sometimes up to 35%-
Accessories, such as lamps and lighting fixtures, ceiling fans, wall mirrors and pictures, and knickknacks, add tremendously to both the appearance and livability of a home. It is amazing just how many accessories many homes have. And the cost can be significant. But with some perseverance, and a bit of shopping around, you can outfit your home while staying within a very affordable budget. Try the following to keep these costs under control.
1. Rule #1 is to never buy accessories at furniture stores or fine department
stores. Even when on sale, these items are most always way over-
2. Rule #2 is to avoid buying lighting fixtures, lamps, and ceiling fans at specialty lighting stores, and other accessories at small retail shops. While prices at these stores have become more reasonable over the past several years due to increased competition, they still remain fairly high.
3. Rule #3 is while specialty home goods stores like Linens N Things, Bed Bath & Beyond, etc. often carry accessories, their prices are usually not very attractive, versus prices available from other sources. Try to resist purchasing accessories in these types of stores, unless it is something you have not been able to locate elsewhere.
4. Rule #4 is to shop around a lot and visit the following types of stores for the best bargains on accessories. If you spend a lot of time looking for those right accessories, you will be able to outfit your home very nicely on a relatively small budget.
